Coretta Scott King Awards

Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal, written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, is the Coretta Scott King Author Book winner for 2010. 

My People, illustrated by Charles R. Smith Jr., is the King Illustrator Book winner. The book was written by Langston Hughes.

  The Coretta Scott King Awards are presented annually by the American Library Association to honor African-American authors and illustrators who create outstanding books for children and young adults. Initially, the award was established in 1969 to recognize authors and then was expanded to include a separate award for illustrators in 1979. These awards are given to commemorate the life and work of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her continuing efforts in working for peace and civil rights issues.

Michael L. Printz Award

Going Bovine by Libba Bray received the 2010 Michael L. Printz Award.

The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Newbery Award

The Newbery Award for 2010 winner is When Your Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Caldecott Award

The 2010 Caldecott Medal winner is The Lion & the Mouse, illustrated and written by Jerry Pinkney.  Lovely watercolor illustrations retell this Aesop fable. 

The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for excellence in illustrations in children's  literature.
